Reflections on the Course

As I look back upon the lectures, the readings, and the course in general, I can see a few themes and overall messages that the material conveys. One theme that I think the material conveys is that although the porn industry appears to be a somewhat shunned and taboo part of society, it is in fact behind some of the major technological advances of the century. Also I think a theme is that the Pornography industry and the Cyber Pornography Industry can be used for both good and bad intentions.
This class was definitely one I will remember. Its fresh and modern material made it very interesting. I enjoyed the blogging aspect of it as I’m sure many students have. It is fitting in today’s world of internet advancements that an entire course can be successfully taught online, with hundreds of participants. I really enjoyed partaking in virtual discussions about modern and newsworthy topics with fellow students. It was very interesting participating in a living breathing society of people discussing their views on various topics. I think I learned a lot about how deeply rooted porn is in our culture. It was truly beneficial to my college experience.

Chapter 11:Chatlog

Chapter 11 in the text mentioned the use of Chat logs by parents. These are programs that save all of the discussions that take place on a program such as AIM. The text says, "For some parents, the cost of violating a child's privacy is worth the gain of learning what is on the child's mind." This stood out on the page to me because I had a friend in High School whose parents could constantly monitor his internet surfing histories and AIM chat logs. I actually remember the first time they confronted him with the information they had been stockpiling for over a month. They chastised him for what he said and events that he talked about. This is a clear invasion of privacy, however because of his punishment, my friend became much more conscious of his communications. He would beware of what he said and his communication was very much restricted to face to face. Whether it be strict parents or government agencies, monitoring and such are now a huge part of today’s technological society.
No one can argue that children are vulnderable on the internet. But who can draw the lines between keeping children safe and invading their privacy. Its a grey area whenever privacy is infringed upon.

I did like the Cyberporn webpage told me too, and I searched google for blogs. To my surprise I found a fairly interesting one about a man who got a chain e-mail saying some things about him being under investigation for child pornography law infringements. He then went to the police station and turned himself in. It just goes to show how a simple worm e-mail can plague a paranoid criminals mind into thinking that he is really being informed of his criminal suspicion via email. It also shows me that the crimes are more common than people think. The police were surprised at this mans confession, as are many who get known for involvement in the illegal porn industry. In so many cases, the perpetrator is someone people you would never expect and its all that much more shocking.

Mr. Lucas Assingment

I would like to start by mentioning that Mr. Lucas's writing skills are impressive. His blogs are very compact and yet efficient in getting their points accross. I would be interested to ask him the following questions:
1) What was the turning poing that made you decide to persue a career in the adult industries?
2) My second question is regarding a quote from a blog Mr. Lucas made on Feb 1, 2006 entitled "Popping the question". The quote reads, "What it comes down to is this: I will never ask a prospective sex partner his sero-status. When having intercourse, we are using condoms no matter what. I repeat: we are using condoms. So what does it matter to me if the person is positive or negative?" What i have to say to that is that in a perfect world, that plan makes sence. However, in the real world condoms are only 97ish% safe. This means that on average, around % of people wont get the protection they need because of one reason or another. Anyways, my question is:Upon Hind-sight, if you hypothetically contracted HIV while using a condom, wouldn't you regret not asking about their "stero-status". And also, what would you say to a person who falls in that 3% and contracted a std while wearing a condom?

I'll be honest, I was looking for a last minute topic for my blog around 11:55 and I read Jaimobuema's blog about Pedophilia. I just wanted to make a comment that even though the topic of child porn and child predetors on the internet is just making its way into public sight, it has been a major problem for years. Ever since the invention of the internet there have been cases of sexual predetors lurking online preying on unexpecting children. Today with websites like myspace.com making it extremely easy for anyone to put information about themselves on the net, its just getting a little out of hand.

And to answer your question about protecting your loved ones, the answer it spread knowledge of the risk and dangers of the interenet to your loved ones. Make them aware of some of the concequences of putting your personal information online.

Indecency

Indecency is based on ones perspective. According to Dictionary.com Indencecy is:

Offensive to good taste; unseemly.
Offensive to public moral values; immodest. See Synonyms at improper.

In my opinion, laws about something so vague and relative to ones individual opinion will always be controversial and under public scrutiny. Usually things that are under review for indecency have very devided support. They are usually very controversial with a near 50/50 split in opinion. And in 50/50 situations like this it equals a lose/lose situation because which ever side wins in the court room leaves the other side bitter and upset. Its very similar to trying to make laws about things such as abortion. People are very divided on such topics

The Not So Friendly Side of the Net

So this weekend I was home at my parents house and I was talking to my mom about her email account. She was having some problems with attachements and I was helping show her how to send pictures and such when she asked me why shes been gets all these emails asking her to sign of for assorted pornography sites. I told her it was most likely because of websites she has joined selling her e-mail to sites who send such information in emails. She replied, "Well thats not very friendly". This got me thinking about the fact that these websites that we trust are selling us out for a few extra bucks. And yet its not really looked at as a crime or an invasion of privacy. Would we accept banks selling our account numbers and atm pin codes. Of Course not. We put trust in these websites and give our email adresses and personal information out all the time. It turns out my mom had just recently joined an online book club. She was surprised to find out that it was probably this action that resulted in her recieving all these emails. Maybe someday websites will choose to have the same integrity as a Bank and keep true to their privacy statements and promises.

One Man’s Obscenity is Another Man’s Fantasy

In my opinion, something like obscenity is hard to define and thus also hard put limits on. Like many of todays hottest topics, opinions range from one side of the spectrum to the other. It is soley based on ones perspective that you grade somethings obscenity. For example a pornography film director might find his films a form of art and free expression. A Devout Catholic might look at his films however, and see something he finds obscene. Its interesting to me that there can be laws regulating something so obviously based on personal opinion. With Everyone in this Country comming from different backgrounds and moral upbringings, it makes it very difficult to protect peoples rights while at the same time protecting people from things that they dont wich to see. Im glad im not a law maker in the current United States Government.

Myth Numero 9

I previously wrote a blog relating to this topic. I wrote that porn can in many cases be beneficial to a relationship. If a relationship can allow it viewing porn may be just the thing needed to spice up a dying sex life. Many things could work. And porn may not be the answer for anyone by any means. But experimentation is rarely a bad thing.

Coveted Best Blog Award

Fear and Blogging in UB's blogs caught my eye from first time that we blogged as a class. First off, his name that appears on the hub is "Fear and blogging in UB". This intruiged me at first because I happen to be a big fan of the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Then as the weeks went on and the blogging continued I found myself always checking to see what Vincent Vega had to say. Most every week he was consistant at having a new and fresh topic to discuss. Also another reason I think that I continue to read his blogs week after week is because he seems interested in the same things that I am interested in.

The second blog that I frequent is Way 2 Much's. I like to peek on this individual's blog because they offer a different perspective than that of my peers. I believe that this individual offers a different perspective because they are obviously more matured than the average college student. I believe that viewing what a different genereation has to say on todays topics is a good way to reflect on your own blog.

Lastly, I like A DAILY DOSE OF PORN's blog. The reason I like this blog is because he or she chooses to be very organized and discuss each lecture in order. Its very easy to read and they get right to the point. They are detailed yet concise.
